I’m Kamila Thayanne, a ceramic artist and the founder of Somos Um Studio.
I live in Caraguatatuba, a small coastal town in Brazil, in a life shaped by the ocean, nature, and a slower, more peaceful rhythm. Surfing is part of my everyday life, as is being surrounded by the Atlantic Forest, beaches, and the animals I encounter along the way. All of this influences the way I see the world and, inevitably, finds its way into what I create.
My relationship with ceramics began with a love for making things by hand and for the magic of transforming raw materials. I like to work intuitively, allowing the clay, colors, shapes, and drawings to guide the process. I’m not interested in perfection or repetition. I prefer the freedom to experiment, imagine, and discover what each piece wants to become.
Every piece at Somos Um is made entirely by me, from beginning to end. From preparing and shaping the clay, creating the forms and drawings, to the drying, glazing, and firing processes. It is a slow and thoughtful practice, with no mass production.
My production is intentionally small and handcrafted, allowing me to be present throughout every stage and maintain a close relationship with everything I create. Because of this, each piece carries not only its own shape and design, but also the subtle marks and unique details that come with being handmade.
Many of my creations are inspired by the ocean and the natural world. Whales, fish, shells, waves, and other creatures appear through different shapes and colors, like little poems inspired by the world that surrounds me.
Here, every piece has its own time. The clay guides part of the journey, and the fire transforms what my hands have created. The result is always a little unpredictable — and that is precisely what makes each creation unique.
I believe that the objects we choose to bring into our homes can also carry feelings, stories, and presence. I like creating ceramics that go beyond their practical purpose — pieces to be used, contemplated, and incorporated into the small rituals of everyday life.
Somos Um was born from this place: from the connection between material, nature, art, and life.
